UPG 2019: Towards a Greater Lagos

20 to 22 November 2019

Towards A Greater Lagos

At the initiative of His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State in Nigeria, “Towards A Greater Lagos” is the theme for the 2019 global gathering of United People Global (UPG), a community that encourages people to make the world a better place by creating a world where ordinary people have more power.

UPG 2019 is a global gathering that is built on a unique perspective: explore the global agenda through the eyes of a city. With the new administration in Lagos committed to being Lagos’ most inclusive movement, UPG 2019 presents a special opportunity for interactions that have real impact on the lives of real people. There are many ways to participate (see Road to Lagos Timeline below). UPG 2019 in Lagos in October is by invitation only. UPG Champions and Champion Supporters from around the world are invited.

More About the Agenda

Interactions take place in diverse formats including panels, workshops, townhall sessions and community activities. Guests include leaders from different sectors who are active internationally and locally, guests also include Champions and stakeholders of the UPG community. This gathering is by invitation only.

All global cities deal with traffic congestion. Lagos is no exception, handling 24 million trips daily with infamous gridlock points with devastating consequences for productivity and economic growth. What pragmatic world-class solutions are available? What progress is already being made? What fresh commitments can boost success?

Health care is focused on taking care of a city’s greatest resource: its people. From primary health care to water, sanitation, waste management and environmental sustainability, explore critical factors that propel a global city to becoming a healthy home for its citizens. What are the priorities for action in Lagos? And what commitments will get Lagos there?

For education to be relevant it must focus on the priorities of the future. And with constant advances in technology and industry value chains that cross more and more borders, no world-class education policy can function in isolation. What breakthroughs in education research and policy are supporting the best performers? What kind of enablers does the 21st century teacher need? What skills does the 21st century student desire? And what commitments will support Lagos on its journey?

Becoming a 21st century economy is an achievement that affects all sectors: from high tech to agriculture. It means boosting factors that affect jobs, the ease of doing business, increasing competitiveness, strengthening civic participation in governance, generating energy that supports 21st century activities, providing adequate housing, protecting both property rights as well as human rights. Where does Lagos want to go? And who are the actors making important commitments? Youth empowerment and gender parity are both barometers and critical enablers.

The unique character of every metropolis can be found in how its citizens entertain themselves. Explore activities that are close to the body, mind and soul of the city: film, music, dance, sports and more. Meet the pioneers whose creations are redefining how Lagos sees itself. Making Lagos a cherished home for its citizens and an obligatory destination for visitors.

Every world class city cherishes its most important asset: its people. Security and Governance is about protecting life, limb and property as well as the work to reach higher levels of rights and responsibilities in the Lagos of our dreams. What standards can Lagos aim for? How can Lagos get there? What role is there for each stakeholder?
