Strength Chosen: Community Engagement

There was a time when I noticed that waste management practices were lacking in a neighborhood near my university. Waste was often disposed of improperly, leading to pollution and potential health risks. Recognizing an opportunity to make a positive change, I collaborated with a group of classmates to initiate a community waste management awareness program.

We organized workshops to educate residents on sorting waste, composting organic materials, and recycling plastics and metals. To make it engaging, we also held a “Cleanest Street” competition, which encouraged people to apply what they had learned and take pride in their neighborhood’s appearance. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and several households adopted the new practices, reducing the volume of improperly disposed waste.

This experience reinforced my belief in the power of community engagement to bring about sustainable change, showing me that when people are informed and involved, they are motivated to take action that benefits the environment and their community.

Yes, I have volunteered in several community-based environmental initiatives, one of which involved supporting a local NGO in organizing a tree-planting campaign. The campaign aimed to combat soil erosion and improve air quality in an area that was experiencing significant deforestation. My role was to help with logistical planning, which included securing tree seedlings, coordinating with local landowners, and assisting with educational sessions on the importance of reforestation.

Through this experience, I learned the power of collective action and the importance of patience and persistence in environmental work. Working with diverse community members also taught me how to communicate sustainability goals in ways that resonated with different audiences. It was inspiring to see people of

Graduate: I have completed a graduate degree (e.g. I have a Masters degree or PhD)

If I were to lead a sustainability-related project, I would initiate a community-based waste reduction and recycling program. This project would focus on educating residents about waste sorting, composting, and recycling to minimize landfill waste. Given the waste challenges many communities face, this initiative would reduce pollution, promote responsible consumption, and encourage sustainable practices. By empowering people to manage waste more effectively, we can create a cleaner environment, improve public health, and foster a culture of sustainability within the community.

One challenge I expect is community resistance to change, as shifting long-standing waste habits can be difficult. To overcome this, I would focus on awareness and education, showing people the direct benefits of waste reduction through workshops and visible impact examples, like a cleaner neighborhood. Another challenge could be limited resources for recycling infrastructure. I would address this by partnering with local businesses and organizations to secure support and by starting with low-cost initiatives, such as composting and simple waste segregation. Building trust and engaging community members as project ambassadors would also help sustain long-term involvement.

national environmental standards and regulations enforcement agency (NESREA)

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) is a Nigerian government agency responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental laws and regulations. Its primary objectives include promoting sustainable environmental practices, regulating pollution, and enforcing environmental standards to protect the ecosystem and public health. NESREA could support my mini-training session by providing expert resources, materials, and guidelines on waste management and recycling practices. They could facilitate workshops or offer speakers to share best practices and legal frameworks. Additionally, NESREA’s involvement could lend credibility to the initiative, encouraging more community members to participate and adhere to sustainable practices, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the training.

I understand the importance of submitting a video; however, I am unable to do so due to unavailability of a good device for making video, and the way i am currently struggling with my network to fill this online form is telling me that even if i find a way to do the video.. uploading the vid would be another problem for me.
