Yes! That is really who you are!

My name is Abdalla Abaker Osman. I studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Engineering) at Al Zaiem Al Azhari University, where I obtained knowledge in the engineering field through courses, such as Environmental and Safety Engineering, Electrical Power Systems, Electrical measurements, Electrical Circuits. During this time, I have built a strong knowledge of how to simulate, design, and construct electrical projects. After obtaining my degree, I worked in several engineering companies to install electrical equipment including Solar Panel on-Gird off-Grid installation, where I led a team to provide solar solutions in commercial, residential as well as agricultural sites. Incidentally, I volunteered in local organizations in Central Darfur State to provide humanitarian assistance to IDPs, where I learned how to effectively communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, how to schedule and organize work, and how to solve complex issues, especially when traveling to rural areas.

Problem-solving

As a team leader for solar system installation, I was assigned to different challenges during the installation procedures. For instance, when I was leading a team to install solar panels at Zalingei Hospital, there was a ten-day delay in delivering the projects. To minimize the delay, I have to accelerate the project work by adding technician numbers. However, I strategically divided my team into 4 groups to increase productivity. Through this approach, I managed to complete the work within time even though we made a slight delay on our schedule.

I live in a city surrounded by IDP camps and villages where I spend a significant amount of time volunteering in different positions. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, while we were providing an awareness campaign among IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in Central Darfur State, the head officer of the Sudan Development Organization in Central Darfur State delegated me to lead a team of 15 volunteers to provide humanitarian responses in Al-Hassahisa and Al-Hamedia camps, Waranga village and Abata village. I strategically organized the team to ensure the accessibility of as many people as possible. Through this outreach, 320,000 people in Al-Hmedia camp, 55,000 in Abata Village, and 25,000 in Waranga Village have received awareness about COVID-19 preventive measures.

Undergraduate: I have completed an undergraduate degree

Over the past five years, I have been working on solar system installation projects and volunteering with different NGOs in Central Darfur Estate, Sudan. Due to these, I have traveled to many rural areas and IDP Camps in and around Zalingei. I have witnessed that even Hospitals in these areas lack electricity access and these areas also lack the experts and technicians to undertake electrification projects or to provide maintenance services. However, It wasn’t until I was shattered by recent estimates that 60% of the Sudanese population lacked access to electricity. Among this percentage, Darfur is predominant. As a young leader, I wonder what my response would be in the court of future generations regarding this matter. As such, I promise myself that one day I will contribute to providing solar system installation training to the youth in IDP camps and rural areas to build their capacities to elevate their communities.

Therefore, I plan to conduct a program for over 100 individuals focusing on developing technical, management, and leadership expertise to undertake solar installation projects in rural areas. This would not only help the youth leverage their skills and acquire employment opportunities to reduce the reliance on international aid but also help them reduce the environmental degradation caused by the dependency on wood charcoal. This would promote sustainable development in the region and help the country, Sudan, meet Sustainable Development Goal 7 ( SDG7).

There are many challenges that I expect to launch my projects. For instance, the organizational capabilities to undertake this project. These include the ability to do effective planning before executing the training to make my participants get as much knowledge and skills as possible. In addition, I have some limitations in my knowledge of how to achieve sustainable development, the tools to do so, and what kind of action is needed to make my contribution more effective. Therefore, participating in programs like the United People Global for Sustainable Leaders Development program would place me in the middle of one of the largest and most exciting programs for leadership development through the training sessions, it would give me a wealth of experience that would not only leverage my leadership skills to train the youth to undertake solar system project installations but also boost my networking skills.
