My name is Abdelmounaim Yamani, and I am currently a master’s student in Environmental Engineering at Nanjing Forestry University in Nanjing, China. Originally from Casablanca-Settat, Morocco, my journey has been marked by a commitment to both academic excellence and impactful community service.
My educational background is rooted in Biomedical Technologies, having earned my bachelor’s degree from Hassan II University. This experience provided me with a solid foundation in medical biology and sparked my interest in environmental sustainability. During my internships at Hassan II Agronomy & Veterinary Institute and Errazi Hospital, I gained hands-on experience in medical research and developed a deep understanding of the intersection between health and the environment.
Beyond academics, I have actively sought leadership roles that allowed me to make a difference. As the Organization Committee Vice President for Logistics at the Youth Speak event and an OGV member at AIESEC Morocco, I honed my organizational and teamwork skills, driving initiatives that fostered community engagement and development. Additionally, my role as an Online English Teacher with YELA has been incredibly rewarding, enabling me to enhance students’ language skills and confidence.
My interests extend to cooking and fitness, activities that help me maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle. I am fluent in Arabic, French, and English, which allows me to connect with and understand diverse groups of people.
My journey has not been without challenges, but I view these as opportunities for growth. Adaptability and resilience are strengths I have cultivated, enabling me to navigate and overcome obstacles. My passion for sustainability is driven by my experiences growing up in Morocco, where I witnessed the urgent need for environmental action, particularly in water conservation and pollution control.
As I continue my journey, I am eager to leverage my background in environmental engineering to contribute to innovative and sustainable solutions. I believe that by working together, we can address the pressing environmental challenges of our time and create a more sustainable world for future generations.

The strength that I choose is “Resilience.”
Resilience has been a cornerstone of my journey, enabling me to navigate and overcome various challenges. One particular instance that highlights this strength is during my internship at Errazi Hospital. The project I was assigned to involved developing a new protocol for managing medical waste, a task that required both technical knowledge and the ability to adapt to unforeseen obstacles.
During the project, we encountered several challenges, including resistance from staff members who were accustomed to the existing protocols and logistical issues related to the implementation of new waste management systems. Despite these hurdles, I remained resilient and focused on our goal.
I initiated a series of meetings with the hospital staff to understand their concerns and provide training on the benefits of the new protocol. Additionally, I collaborated with the logistics team to streamline the implementation process, ensuring that the new systems were integrated smoothly.
Through persistent effort and adaptability, we successfully implemented the new medical waste management protocol, significantly improving the hospital’s environmental impact. This experience underscored the importance of resilience in achieving sustainability goals and reinforced my commitment to continuous learning and adaptation in the face of challenges.

If I were to lead a sustainability-related project in my community, I would initiate a “Community Recycling Awareness Campaign.” The primary goal of this project would be to educate residents about the importance of recycling and proper waste management, aiming to increase recycling rates and reduce waste in our local area. This campaign would involve organizing workshops, community clean-up days, and informational sessions to teach residents about what can and cannot be recycled, how to sort waste correctly, and the environmental benefits of recycling.
To make the project engaging, I would collaborate with local schools, businesses, and community organizations to create competitions and incentives for residents to participate actively. For example, neighborhoods could compete to achieve the highest recycling rates, with winners receiving recognition or small rewards. By promoting recycling in a fun and collaborative manner, the project would foster a sense of community involvement and responsibility towards reducing waste.

One challenge I anticipate with the Community Recycling Awareness Campaign is overcoming misconceptions and apathy among residents regarding recycling. Many individuals may not see the immediate benefits of participating in recycling programs. To address this, I would develop targeted messaging that highlights the tangible benefits of recycling, such as reducing landfill waste and conserving natural resources. Utilizing social media and local media outlets to share success stories and informative content would help raise awareness and generate interest.
Another potential challenge is securing collaboration from local businesses and organizations. To tackle this, I would reach out early in the planning process to explain the campaign’s goals and benefits. Offering partnership opportunities, such as co-hosting events or providing promotional materials, could encourage local entities to get involved. Additionally, establishing a small advisory board composed of community members and representatives from local organizations could provide valuable support and insights, making it easier to engage others.
Lastly, measuring the campaign’s success and impact could pose a challenge. To address this, I would establish clear metrics for evaluating the program, such as tracking recycling rates before and after the campaign and gathering feedback from participants through surveys. Regularly sharing these results with the community would reinforce the importance of their participation and encourage ongoing engagement.
