Learn how to reduce, reuse and recycle. The most important sustainability concepts that should be taught to children are the three principles of helping the planet: reduce, reuse and recycle. The principles can help children learn all the basics of sustainability every day. Create projects or implement some new family practices to teach your children how to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Grow your own food in your home garden. Sustainability is all about the small changes that people can make to positively impact the Earth. One of the most important and enjoyable activities that can yield many rewards is designing a home garden. Children should be taught how to provide for their families by growing vegetables and fruits.
Create a compost bin instead of people throwing away food scraps. They can be added to organic compost to help create rich soil for your home garden. Organic composting is an effective and excellent way to help prevent food waste. It is also an excellent scientific activity for all children and helps teach them the benefits that organic composting can provide for the environment. Reuse and recycle things for crafts, put the lesson of reduce, reuse and recycle into practice when doing some handicrafts to make many distinctive and innovative handicrafts.
How to explain sustainability to children
There are many ways to explain the meaning of sustainability to children, as parents should follow a number of the following methods:
First, it is necessary to provide a clear and explicit definition to the child about the meaning of sustainability, as sustainability means caring for the earth to remain healthy for a long time.
Take the child on some outdoor adventures, so that they get to know nature and see trees and the life cycle of beautiful and colorful butterflies, as these experiences can directly contribute to igniting his curiosity and appreciation for the environment.
Turn sustainability into a game, and teach the child the three concepts of reduce, reuse and recycle, and create a recycling station at home and participate in sorting materials that accept recycling, and also encourage and stimulate his creativity by using many recycled materials in many art projects and also handicrafts.
Share environmental stories with your child and introduce them to environmental superheroes like Captain Planet, then show them that they can become children’s heroes by conserving resources, recycling and saving the environment.
