Yes! That is really who you are!

I’m Azzahra, someone who finds joy and purpose in social activities, especially in education, the environment, and business, with a strong focus on sustainability programs. I’m passionate about making a difference, and for the past five years, I’ve been leading two impactful communities: Ruang Pangan and Pangan Kito, both dedicated to reducing food waste and food loss in Indonesia. I’m committed to creating innovative solutions to address my country’s challenges. I’m also a co-founder of ZIPIZI Kids, a creative class community that brings game-based English learning to primary school students outside school hours. I’m inspired by how education and sustainability can work hand-in-hand to empower the next generation and create lasting change. I’m proud of the journey I’ve taken so far and excited about the impact these initiatives have made. I’m always looking for ways to grow and continue contributing to a better future for my community and beyond. What part of my journey do you find most interesting?

Leadership skills, Communication Skills, Problem-solver, Creative-Innovative, Disciplined, Time Management.

As a leader of Ruang Pangan and Pangan Kito, I tackled the issue of food waste and food loss by guiding my community to implement innovative and sustainable solutions. My leadership skills, including strategic planning, collaboration, and resource management, enabled us to create programs that educate the public about food waste reduction and develop systems for redistributing surplus food to those in need. This included fostering partnerships with local farmers, schools, and government agencies to amplify our impact.
By focusing on inclusivity and capacity-building, I identified the strengths of each team member and assigned them roles that best suited their abilities. This approach not only motivated members but also improved overall productivity. I encouraged open communication and creative thinking, which helped us overcome obstacles, such as limited resources and public awareness, to successfully execute our programs.
One of my proudest moments was leading Ruang Pangan to win a national award for community innovation in sustainability. The journey began with identifying the pressing problem of food waste in Bandar Lampung. Under my leadership, the team launched a program to repurpose unsold food from local markets into meals for underprivileged communities.
I mobilized volunteers, coordinated logistics with local vendors, and engaged stakeholders in meaningful dialogues to ensure the program’s success. When faced with challenges, such as resistance from some vendors, I utilized my interpersonal skills to explain the program’s benefits and foster trust.
In addition to operational success, I focused on storytelling and advocacy, ensuring our work gained visibility at the national level. I organized a presentation for a sustainability forum, highlighting the community’s efforts and tangible results, such as a 25% reduction in food waste within six months.
This achievement was not just about receiving an award; it demonstrated the power of teamwork, resilience, and innovative thinking. My leadership turned a small, local initiative into a nationally recognized example of how communities can come together to address global challenges like food waste. Leadership Lessons Applied: Visionary Thinking: Setting clear goals for Ruang Pangan and Pangan Kito while inspiring members to believe in the mission. Collaboration: Building partnerships across sectors and empowering team members to maximize their contributions.

Volunteering has always been a meaningful way for me to contribute to society while learning valuable life lessons. My experiences teaching English in Tegal Island, educating children about healthy food in the Way Halim sub-district, and raising public awareness about food waste in Bandar Lampung city have not only deepened my commitment to community development but also enriched my personal growth in profound ways. Teaching English in Tegal Island: Adaptability and Cultural AwarenessTegal Island, is a remote village surrounded by nature’s beauty, offers a unique and challenging environment for teaching English. Limited resources and access to facilities required me to be highly adaptable and creative in my teaching approach. I learned to use simple tools, such as storytelling and games, to make lessons engaging and effective. More importantly, this experience taught me the value of cultural sensitivity. By immersing myself in the local way of life, I developed a deeper appreciation for the community’s traditions and challenges. This instilled in me a sense of humility and respect, essential qualities for working with diverse populations.
Raising Awareness About Food Waste: Advocacy and Community Engagement My work in raising public awareness about food waste in Bandar Lampung city further solidified my passion for sustainability. Through workshops, campaigns, and community discussions, I learned how to effectively communicate a pressing issue to diverse audiences. I developed skills in advocacy, understanding how to inspire collective action by linking the topic to people’s daily lives. Additionally, engaging with individuals from various backgrounds highlighted the importance of collaboration and the potential for small, community-led initiatives to drive significant change.
Volunteering has been a journey of personal and professional growth, teaching me to adapt, communicate, and advocate for meaningful change. Each experience, whether on a remote island or in a bustling city, has been a reminder of the power of education and collective action. These lessons continue to inspire me to work toward a better, more sustainable future, driven by the belief that even small actions can create a ripple effect of positive change.

Undergraduate: I have completed an undergraduate degree

If I were to lead a sustainability-related project in my community, it would focus on an integrated program called “Sustainable Futures: From Plate to Planet.” This initiative would combine the efforts of Ruang Pangan, Pangan Kito, and ZIPIZIKids to tackle food waste and foster sustainable practices while empowering the next generation through education. The Vision: The project aims to create a sustainable food ecosystem in Bandar Lampung by addressing food waste at its core and educating both children and adults about sustainable living. By integrating the expertise and experience of Ruang Pangan, Pangan Kito, and ZIPIZIKids, the project would work to reduce food loss, redistribute surplus food, and instill a culture of sustainability in the community. Why This Project? Food waste is a pressing issue in Bandar Lampung, where significant amounts of edible food are discarded daily while many people still face food insecurity. Through my work with Ruang Pangan and Pangan Kito, I have witnessed the devastating impact of food waste on both people and the environment. Addressing this issue not only reduces hunger but also minimizes the ecological footprint of food production. Additionally, education is key to long-term sustainability. ZIPIZIKids has shown me the transformative power of teaching children early. By integrating lessons on food waste and environmental stewardship into children’s activities, we can nurture a generation that values and practices sustainability. The Impact: This project would have both immediate and long-term benefits. In the short term, it would alleviate hunger by redistributing surplus food and reducing waste sent to landfills. Over time, it would foster a culture of sustainability within the community, with children acting as catalysts for change in their families and neighborhoods. Why I Believe This Project Will Succeed: Having led Ruang Pangan, Pangan Kito, and ZIPIZIKids, I understand the challenges and opportunities of community-driven initiatives. My leadership skills, combined with the collective experience of these organizations, position us well to execute a project of this scale. Furthermore, the people of Bandar Lampung have shown a willingness to engage and support initiatives that benefit the environment and community. “Sustainable Futures: From Plate to Planet” represents a holistic approach to tackling food waste while educating and empowering the community.

Implementing the “Sustainable Futures: From Plate to Planet” project is a complex endeavor that will inevitably come with challenges. Drawing from my experience leading Ruang Pangan, Pangan Kito, and ZIPIZIKids, I anticipate the following obstacles and propose strategies to overcome them:
1. Limited Community Awareness and Engagement Many people may not fully understand the severity of food waste and its environmental and social impact, leading to limited participation in the project’s initiatives. Building on my experience with public awareness campaigns, I would initiate targeted outreach programs using relatable and accessible messaging. Collaborating with local influencers, schools, and religious leaders can amplify the message and build trust within the community. Hosting engaging events like food festivals, workshops, and interactive sessions would also help attract and educate participants.
2. Resistance to Behavior Change Encouraging people to adopt new habits, such as separating food waste or donating surplus food, may face resistance due to ingrained practices or perceived inconvenience. From my work in ZIPIZIKids, I’ve learned the importance of starting with small, achievable actions. I would implement step-by-step programs that gradually introduce new behaviors. Providing incentives, such as discounts for donors at local businesses or recognition for participating households, could further motivate change. Sharing success stories from similar efforts in Ruang Pangan and Pangan Kito would also inspire others to get involved.
3. Resource Constraints Establishing food redistribution networks and community composting centers requires financial resources, infrastructure, and manpower, which can be limited. My leadership experience in Pangan Kito has shown the value of partnerships. I would collaborate with local governments, NGOs, and private businesses to secure funding, logistical support, and sponsorships. Volunteers from the community would also be recruited to minimize costs. Additionally, tapping into grants for sustainability projects and leveraging crowdfunding platforms could help bridge resource gaps. Every project comes with challenges, but my leadership experience with Ruang Pangan, Pangan Kito, and ZIPIZIKids has prepared focusing on community engagement, partnerships, and continuous innovation, I am confident that the “Sustainable Futures” project can overcome these challenges and create meaningful, lasting change in Bandar Lampung.
